Some people think best sitting perfectly still. The rest of us have Urmas.

A note from Urmas.

I design and make these in Tallinn, in my own studio.

I made the first one for my own child, who cannot sit still for long. I am in no position to complain. Neither can I.

Then I tested a thousand shapes and materials. This is the one that is right.

It is here for you now. Something calming for your hands to do, so that your mind can go where it needs to.

Urmas

I read email.

Made for five-year-olds. Stolen by their parents.

Put one on a table and somebody picks it up. Then somebody else asks for a go.

For a child it goes to the car, the classroom and the long wait at an airport. For an adult it sits beside the laptop and comes to meetings, which was never the plan.

Focus toys, it turns out, have no age limit.

One printed piece. No small parts.

Designed and made in Tallinn.

Every spiral is printed in our own studio, one at a time, and taken off the bed by hand.

It comes off the bed finished. One piece of plastic and nothing else: no coating, no paint, no filler, nothing added to make it cheaper.

Nothing is glued, screwed or clipped to anything else, which is why there is nothing on it to come apart.

No batteries to replace. No mechanism to fail.

Children are the best testers.

They do not read the instructions, which is exactly what makes them useful.

Every version goes to a table of five-year-olds before it goes anywhere else, and it comes back either in one piece or with a list of things to change.

Then somebody does the thing nobody in the studio thought of.

For children. For grown-ups. For anyone whose mind likes to move.

Keep one in the car. Put one in a school bag. Leave one beside your laptop.

We like technology and we are not going to lecture anybody about screen time, but there is something in holding an object that cannot interrupt you, cannot update itself and does not know where you are.

Bring a few to your next meeting and see how long they stay on your side of the table.

Buy fewer things. Make the good ones last.
